Oldham could be in for a bleak Christmas as forecasters predict light showers.

Hopes of a white Christmas in the borough have been scuppered, as the Met Office anticipates temperatures as hot as seven degrees and for it to only drop as low as six.

From midnight until 6am, Santa may need to navigate his sleigh through rain as meteorologists anticipate a 40 percent chance in the borough.

As parents are rudely awoken by excited children jumping on them, rain could drizzle down their windows with the Met Office predicting a 30 percent chance of precipitation to continue until 9am.

For the next three hours until noon, rain should hold off with only a 10 percent chance of rainfall and temperatures at six degrees.

Winds will pick up from 12pm, as Oldham is set to be hit by a breeze with gales as strong as 30mph; residents are also likely to experience light rain - a 50 percent chance.

Temperatures will peak at noon until 3pm, when they fall back down to six degrees, while forecaster anticipate the next three hours to be cloudy despite there being a 50 percent chance of rain.

As many across the borough finish their Christmas dinner, and some keyworkers clock out to spend time with their family, residents should expect to be calmed by rolling clouds for the few hours from 6pm.

With the kids in bed, the Christmas party should be underway by 9pm when residents will be sheltered from the cold, as the Met Office predicts there to be a one in five chance of rain until midnight.

In spite of the predictions, the Met Office can only accurately forecast if snow is likely on Christmas Day up to five days beforehand.

On Christmas Eve, forecasters predict heavy rain to take place throughout the day.
