Plans have been lodged to demolish a 19th-century Oldham pub which has been closed since 2018 and replace it with a convenience store.

The Owd Tatts pub, on Butler Green, Chadderton, is currently boarded up.

Now, plans have been submitted to demolish the pub building and build a new convenience store.

The store’s sale area is planned to be below 280 square metres meaning it does not have to follow Sunday trading restrictions.

The shop is planned to open from 7am to 11pm each day.

At least 15 staff are expected to be employed at the shop, which the applicant says is expected to carry a range of groceries, ready meals, sandwiches, snacks, beers, wines, and spirits, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables.

Local councillors welcomed the news, saying the area is currently a fly-tipping ‘hot spot’.

In a statement, Labour Cllr Holly Harrison said: “I've no doubt that many residents will welcome this proposal, and from what is available at the present time I welcome this proposal along with my ward colleagues.

“The car park has been a fly tipping hot spot for many years and the landowner has done what they reasonably could to try and maintain the site. With the store facing the car park hopefully this will deter such fly tipping in the future

“This application is still in the early stages but there is no doubt that this would greatly enhance the site.”

Additionally, Martins Bakery, located next to the site, has submitted an application to re-orient its entrance to face that of the new shop and car park.

The pub car park would be reduced from 30 car spaces to 20, with one additional disabled space up from none before. Four cycle spaces will also be installed.

If accepted, Martins Bakery will add eight additional car parking spaces within its boundary.
