Horses are far from the mane attraction at the 500-member Saddleworth Golf Club, which boasts 18 holes just across from Uppermill.

But a pair of fore-legged visitors were spotted by Saddleworth Golf Club’s head professional Andy Earlam on Saturday morning.

Andy thought he was being taken for a foal when a member told him the explorative equines were horsing around the first hole – before realising he needed to rally the cavalry for help.

He said: “I came in to work and I opened the shop up and I’m working, the next minute a member said ‘there’s a couple of horses on the first hole’.

“I said ‘You what’, so I looked outside, looked down the fairway and there were two horses.

"I sent a message to all the staff and asked if anybody could help and I posted it on social media to see if anyone had lost two horses.”

Andy said he didn’t know where the horses had gone, with members saying they were seen again by the first hole before disappearing.

In a fashion night-mare, the senseless steeds neighglected to conform to the club’s dress code, which requires golf-specific footwear to be worn.

Andy said: “It’s alright as long as they’re wearing shoes. Hoofprints can damage the greens or softer ground.”

Saddleworth Golf Club was formed in May 1904 by local men and women who met at the Mechanics Institute in Uppermill. The club opened four months later, in October 1904.
