An injured kitten that may have strayed from its home was found in Oldham and put down.

The RSPCA has appealed for information to find its owner after the feline was found on Rock Street, in the centre of Oldham, on Saturday, December 30.

The black cat was discovered with a bandage wrapped around its leg and the charity believe it was likely applied by an owner rather than a vet - while it is also unknown if it was abandoned, or had simply gone missing from home.

Animal rescue officer Ross Allan said: “The cat was found struggling to walk and was pulling their back legs behind them, so they were clearly in a lot of pain. A vet examination showed that the kitten had a badly broken leg.

“We have made enquiries in the local area and have put up posters but we have had no luck so far.

“We don’t know if the cat was abandoned or is being missed by an owner, so we are urging anyone with information about the cat to get in touch with us.”

In 2023, the RSPCA received 20,995 reports of an abandoned animal - the most it has recorded since the turn of the decade.

Ross added: “Sadly, animal neglect and abandonment calls to us are at a three-year high, which is why we need our supporters to join the winter rescue to help more animals like this poor cat.”

Those with information on who the kitten, which was not microchipped, belongs to should the RSPCA on 0300 123 8018, quoting reference 01202799.
