A volunteer rescue team which has been saving lives for 60 years is celebrating reaching the impressive milestone this week.

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team are called out to assist with search and rescue missions, often across treacherous terrains and in extreme weather conditions.

Recent examples include a search for displaced residents affected by the tornado in Tameside just after Christmas, as well a successful rescue mission of lost walkers in the snow.

In November last year, a volunteer happened to be in the right place at the right time and provided treatment to a woman at a Remembrance Sunday event.

In one particular search, the team were out all night in "next to zero" visibility to search for a man at risk, deploying search dogs and seeking additional assistance from its neighbouring team.

Many of those on the search managed to get just a few hours of sleep before heading out to their day jobs.

But this is just a snapshot of what the team assists with on a regular basis - and has done for the past 60 years.

In a post on social media, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team said it wanted to start the new year by taking a moment to thank its supporters for their "continued unwavering support and generosity".

The team formed in 1964 and, in recognition of hitting its 60th milestone this year, volunteers said they are planning "a series of events to celebrate our diamond anniversary" and to "raise awareness to the work we do for the local community and beyond".

The post added: "As we embark on the year ahead, please know that your support remains fundamental to our continued success and operation.

"We look forward to celebrating with you in the year ahead.

"Oldham Mountain Rescue Team is a voluntary organisation whose objective is 'to save life and alleviate distress, primarily in upland and mountain areas' without cost or obligation.

"Our team of 50 plus volunteers provide a professional rescue service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

"We are funded almost entirely by generous public donations."
