A three-day weather warning for snow and ice in Oldham has been issued by the Met Office as the borough braces for cold weather.

Starting in the early hours of Tuesday (January 16) and ending late on Thursday (January 18), the borough is set to see snow showers and icy surfaces.

According to the Met Office, snow showers could merge into a longer spell of snow on Tuesday, while Wednesday and Thursday are expected to see frequent snow showers.

The national weather service has issued Oldham with a yellow weather warning and has warned that there could be travel delays and potential power cuts.

Oldhamers have been warned to prepare for the following circumstances:

  • Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers
  • Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel
  • A chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • There is a chance some rural communities could become cut off

On Tuesday, parts of the Northwest could see 2-5cm of snow in a few hours, with a similar amount of snow expected from the snow showers on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Met Office has warned motorists to plan their route, check for delays and road closures, set off earlier than usual and to have essentials in their car in case of delays.

Temperatures are expected to be below zero on all three days the weather warning is in place, although temperatures are expected to feel even colder.
