A woman has been jailed after her XL Bully attacked a 12-year-old boy and left him with serious injuries requiring surgery.

At Minshull Street Crown Court on Friday (January 12), Paula Jenkins was sentenced for two counts of being the owner of a dog which was dangerously out of control causing injury.

On October 22 last year, Mohid Gardazee was cycling home when he was attacked by the XL Bully, leaving him with injuries to his arm which needed hours surgery.

The incident happened on Villa Road and resulted in a 31-year-old woman also being attacked and treated for injuries, however these were not as serious as those suffered by the Mohid.

Speaking around the time of the attack, Mohid's father Ahmad said his neighbours had ‘risked their lives’ to stop the dog from carrying out further damage.

The accountant said: “People were saying the boy was dead. But luckily, luckily he survived.

“It was traumatic. It was really hard for me to kind of keep calm.

“I was thinking, ‘It could be my fault’. All those things go through your mind – how is he going to do in the future with his right arm?

“My wife was crying, my daughter was crying. But we are very thankful to our neighbours who called the police and the ambulance.

“When we knew he was alive, we relaxed.”

Mohid was taken to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital after the attack, where he endured hours of painful surgery.

But thankfully, doctors were able to save his arm and close up most of his wounds.

Jenkins, of Meldrum Street, Hathershaw, pleaded guilty to the two offences at Tameside Magistrates' Court in November before being sentenced last week.

The 43-year-old was handed a prison sentence of 16 months and has been banned from owning a dog for five years

An order was also made by the court for the destruction of the XL Bully.
