Strong winds that could bring "danger to life" are set to hit Oldham this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning starting on Sunday (January 21) and going into Monday, with gales potentially reaching speeds of up to 70mph in the borough.

The warning is set to start at 6am on Sunday and will last until 6am on Monday.

The warning applies to the majority of the United Kingdom and there is a chance that travel and utilities could be disrupted as a result of the conditions.

According to the Met Office, Oldhamers can expect:

  • A small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected
  • A slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
  • A slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • A small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
  • A small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris
  • A small chance that some roads and bridges could close

Most places in the country are likely to see south-westerly winds gust to around 50-60 mph and gusts may reach 60-70 mph for exposed locations, such as coasts.

The Met Office warned that further updates to the warning to be expected over the coming days.
