Two Oldham secondary schools have pupils performing above average at the end of Key Stage 4, figures have shown.

Performance data of secondary schools around the country were released by the government at the end of last year, which show how schools in the borough ranked.

The figures were taken after students finished Key Stage 4 and compared the results to the pupils' results at the end of Key Stage 2 to mark their progress in order to find their Progress 8 score.

Of the secondary schools in Oldham, two schools finished with above average Progress 8 scores.

The Blue Coat School on Egerton Street secured a Progress 8 score of 0.57, which was well above average.

The other school to attain an above average score was The Oldham Academy North (TOAN), which also finished well above average with 0.54.

Jessica Giraud, headteacher at TOAN said: “I am absolutely delighted that TOAN has received a well above average progress score based on our Key Stage 4 results and that we are the second highest performing school in the borough.

“It’s brilliant to see how much our children are benefitting from the education we provide them.  All the staff and students at TOAN deserve a massive congratulations for this achievement.

“It’s clear that all staff at the school are working very hard to improve educational outcomes for students and that their dedication is paying off.”

Cllr Mohon Ali, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills said: “More than 3,300 students from 15 Oldham secondary and special schools were successful in gaining the GCSE grades to move on to further education and training last summer.

“These grades have improved across the board in comparison with the pre-pandemic results in 2019.

“Most of our secondary schools and academies posted improvements, resulting in better attainment and progress scores.

"This was not the same in other areas of England. The key measures saw attainment 8 improve to 42.9, progress 8 improve to -0.13 and 38 per cent of pupils achieving a strong pass in English and maths.

“I’m incredibly proud of the achievements of our young people at schools across Oldham, and I want to thank the school staff and parents for supporting children through their secondary school education that was seriously affected by the pandemic.”

The Blue Coat School was approached for a comment.
