Residents have criticised temporary lights and roadworks for creating a "nightmare" traffic jam over the weekend.

Over on Block Lane in Chadderton, multi-way traffic lights and signals have been put up for various construction work.

Official notices released last week maps out the 60 different roadworks which are taking place across the borough this month which includes temporary traffic lights scheduled for 28 different works while 25 roads will be narrowed to single-file traffic.

But residents said the system has already caused a pile-up of traffic over the weekend, with drivers claiming they were waiting more than two hours to exit Block Lane.

A picture snapped on Friday night reveals a glimpse into the mayhem as a long line of stationary cars stretched all the way down the street.

Residents have since commented on the situation and taken to social media to air their views, with many describing it as a "nightmare" to get around the borough and a "shambolic" system that is "never-ending".

One man said: "There have been traffic lights and road closure around Eaves Lane, Fields New Road and everywhere in between for about a year.

"I was caught in the lights near Block Lane the other day and just sat there when I could easily of carried on.

"There seems to be a thing these days about having three and four-way traffic lights which are in many cases totally unnecessary.

"Plus of course, it's 50/50 as to whether they are actually working - everyone's light on red."

Another driver said it took her 20 minutes to get from the bottom of Fields New Road to the top, saying "it's a joke - the road is backed up all the way round".

"It's an absolute shambles at school time", a woman added.

Others said the traffic is also "bad" on other routes around the area, including Denton Lane and Fields New Road.

Another woman wrote: "It's an absolute nightmare.

"I've got temporary lights outside my house. I can't park my car outside unless I want it wiping out by a wagon.

"A new internet provider is being installed, so it's going to be like this for a good while."

Meanwhile, a resident said it was quicker to walk to their destination though she said she saw drivers "jumping the lights" which she described as "downright dangerous" for pedestrians.

She added: "People have no patience - there were at least 10 cars which overtook and jumped the lights coming down Block Lane/Butler Green."

Some residents also said the situation was better when there was a mini roundabout on the street.

"That's the reason it's called Block Lane", joked another.

The temporary traffic light system on Block Lane is expected to last from January 22 through to February 2, though multi-way signals were brought in as of January 16 for Netomnia roadworks.

Single file traffic is also planned to last on the street up until Wednesday, January 24, for Grain Connect roadworks.
