A road which runs through the heart of Oldham town centre is closed today after a building started to 'collapse' in the storm over the weekend.

At around 4.30pm yesterday (Sunday), emergency services were called to reports of a building at risk of collapsing on Yorkshire Street.

A photograph of the scene shows the John Clegg Opticians signage and shop front had come away from the main structure of the building.

Emergency services also closed the road for drivers and pedestrians.

In an update on the situation this morning, Oldham Council confirmed Yorkshire Street remains closed near the junction with Fairbotton Street.

The local authority said this is because "the front of a building was damaged by Storm Isha".

It added: "We are working to get the road reopened as soon as possible.

"In the meantime use other routes."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) also confirmed fire crews were in attendance on Sunday.

The fire service said: "One fire engine from Oldham Central fire station, along with the Technical Response Unit from Ashton, were called to reports of a building in danger of collapsing on Yorkshire Street, Oldham.

“Crews arrived quickly at the scene."

Firefighters used timber saws and lighting to make the building safe.

Greater Manchester Police has also been approached for comment.
