An Oldham GP has received a good rating from the Care Quality Commission – despite a 2.9-star rating on Google.

CH Medical, located in the Fields New Road Primary Care Centre in Chadderton, received a ‘good’ rating from inspectors in a report published last week.

Broken down, the CQC tested the GP practice in regard to five key questions – whether the service was: safe, effective, caring, responsive to people’s needs, and well-led.

The practice, which has more than 12,000 patients, received ‘good’ in nearly all of the questions but was told it required improvement regarding the service’s responsiveness.

This contrasted with the GP’s previous inspection in 2016, where it received ‘good’ in all five areas.

In the detailed report, the CQC noted that the practices’ patient list had grown from 7,838 in 216 to 12,117 now after nearby practices had closed down, causing challenges and meaning the GP had increased its clinical capacity to manage increased demand.

According to the report, authored by CQC chief inspector Dr Sean O’Kelly, the practice protected patients from avoidable harm, and met patients’ needs through effective care and treatment. The practice’s leadership was also praised.

However, the results of the most recent GP Patient Survey were said to have highlighted areas for improvement around access to services.

Staff were praised for responding to safeguarding concerns and for holding safeguarding meetings. The practice was also praised for carrying out appropriate recruitment checks on its staff.

To improve, inspectors told the GP to increase access to services, and to take steps to improve the uptake of cervical screening and childhood immunisations – with just 70 per cent of those eligible taking up cervical screening, lower than the 80 per cent target.
