Police say the victim was "forcibly pushed to the ground in a threatening manner" by two of the suspects, and was threatened with a knife and robbed of his personal belongings.
This included his coat and Apple AirPods.
Meanwhile, the third suspect allegedly "chased after" the victim's friend.
In a public appeal to trace their whereabouts, Greater Manchester Police has released images of three young men officers want to speak to.
The group was seen before the incident getting off the tram at Failsworth tram stop on Hardman Lane before the robbery occurred.
