An Oldham man was rushed to hospital with head injuries after being hit by a car.

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) cordon was in place on Manchester Street for up to three hours after officers were called to the scene at 6.30am.

Lesley Robinson was working at MT Bellys Cafe, over the road from where the crash took place, and witnessed the aftermath.

"Someone came in and said there was a guy in the middle of the road - that was between 6am and 6.30am," the 60-year-old said.

"We've been dead this morning because the traffic came to a standstill - someone got ran over.

"The driver was with him, I think it was an ambulance driver in his own car as they had the uniform on."

At a bus stop on Manchester Street, near to Windsor Road, a silver Jaguar was parked up with a damaged bonnet and a large circular imprint on the windscreen. Beside the vehicle, a cap and headphones laid discarded.

According to a nearby worker, the Manchester Street cordon was in place for three hours from around 6.30am until roughly 9.30am, while officers remained on scene until 10.30am.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "On Monday 29 January 2024, officers were called to reports of a concern for welfare of a man on Windsor Road in Oldham at 6.30am.

"A man was taken to hospital with an injury to his head, where his condition remains unknown.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

While a spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service added: "There’s no indication at this stage that the driver was a member of staff.

"All I can confirm is that the patient was taken to hospital with head injuries."

GMP have been contacted for an update on the welfare of the man.
