A man has been jailed for stealing baby milk from a shop in Manchester.

Zahid Hussain, of Tate Street, Glodwick, stole £28 worth of baby milk from the Co-op shop outside Manchester Piccadilly train station on January 26.

At Manchester Magistrates' Court the following day, the 38-year-old pleaded guilty to the theft and was given a 14-day prison sentence, along with an order to pay a victim surcharge of £154.

An Oldham man has been sent to prison for driving whilst disqualified in Liverpool.

Makhon Miah, of Mildred Avenue, Royton, was found to be driving on Great Homer Street, Liverpool, on Tuesday (January 30), despite the fact he was disqualified from getting behind the wheel.

The day after the offence, the 39-year-old appeared at Sefton Magistrates' Court where he pleaded guilty to driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance.

Miah was a taxi driver who had not surrendered his taxi licence to licence authorities and had continued to drive for employment, meaning he had breached a court order and was deemed a risk to members of the public.

He was sent to prison for eight weeks and was disqualified from driving for 16 months, while he was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £154.

A man who tried to steal more than £100 worth of alcohol from an Oldham supermarket has been jailed.

Shahid Mahmood, of Spring Street, Waterhead, attempted to steal two bottles of cognac and one bottle of Courvousier, worth £107.50 in total, from Tesco in Failsworth on November 18 last year.

On January 15, the 42-year-old failed to surrender to custody at Tameside Magistrates' Court, having been released on bail on November 20, two days after the attempted theft.

On January 27, Mahmood appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court, where he pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to court, having pleaded guilty to the attempted theft on November 20.

He was jailed for 14 days on the grounds of his record of non-compliance with the probation services.
