A fire which broke out on the roof of a property in Chadderton today prompted a huge emergency service response.

At around 11.45am today (Friday, February 2), fire crews were called to reports of a blaze on Hollinwood Avenue.

Witnesses at the scene believed an old bank in the area was the source of the fire and a video showed several fire engines were in attendance.

David McGee, a resident in the area, said there was still smoke in the air an hour and a half after emergency services had arrived on the scene.

The fire service confirmed it the fire was coming from the roof of a property and that eight crews from across Greater Manchester attended.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 11.45am today (Friday, February 2) eight fire engines from fire stations across Greater Manchester along with the technical response unit from Ashton-Under-Lyne, hydraulic platform from Oldham, incident command unit from Rochdale fire stations and the aerial unit attended a fire involving a roof of a property on Hollingwood Avenue, Chadderton.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked hard to extinguish the fire."

Greater Manchester Police has also been approached for comment.
