An Oldham chippy raised more than £20,000 for victims of the Gaza conflict in its opening weekend.

Reel Fish and Chips, on Lees Road, celebrated its grand opening weekend (January 26 - 28) by donating all its proceeds to the Al-Khair Foundation, a charity which offers aid and relief to those in need on both sides of the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Brothers Mudassir Ibrahim and Kazam Ali, who founded the business in Bolton, helped raise £21,525 through money raised behind the till, as well as donations on the weekend and also an online campaign.

Speaking about their successful opening, Mudassir said: "It went really well because to be honest, from the outset supporting charities has been crucial to the Reel Fish and Chips brand.

"It was lovely to see everyone even people that weren't from Oldham but in neighbouring towns come down - yes it was just really nice to see people coming together.

"The people of Oldham have been so generous that it's made it impossible to tell how much we made in the till as people would say make it £40 or £50, rounding their orders up."

He continued: "The majority of the money raised was through people's donations over the full weekend and even online donations - on the day any donations went into the boxes that we had out and they were taken to the charity.

In Bolton, their branch feeds the homeless on a weekly basis and they now plan to do the same for Oldham out of their shop - which used to be the Grouse Inn.

The Oldham Times reviewed the chippy during its grand opening, and was met inside by dozens of customers filling the 20 seats that it holds.

Mudassir added: "It's a new venture and an expansion of our brand so it's definitely exciting times for us, and I would like to think we've made a positive impression having given a little glimpse of what we're all about.

"Our hope is to continue the trend that we've started in Bolton into Oldham, and we'll be raising money for local projects in Oldham - it won't always be international charities.

"We just want people to come and try the food because we believe the best thing about our brand is the food - just come and give it a go and make up your own mind on us."
