An Oldham man is taking part in a challenge to walk 100km across the Arctic Circle as he looks to raise money for a cancer centre.

Neil Jones will take on the gruelling challenge next month, along with 16 others who will be split in to two groups.

The group will all have to pull sleighs, wear snow shoes, sleep in huts, face frostbite, melt their own water and carry their own food, all while facing temperatures possibly below -40°C, as well as whiteouts.

Asked how he was feeling about the challenge, Neil said: "I'm feeling alright, I've been doing lots of training, I've been training since August."

He has taken on major challenges before, including high altitude treks, however this will be his first time tackling the Arctic Circle.

Neil is looking to raise money for NHS Velindre Cancer Centre, a cancer centre based in Wales.

One of the men in the group who has arranged the trip is from North Wales and lost his wife to cancer, and so each of those taking part is raising money for the Velindre Centre.

Neil has organised a JustGiving page, having set a target of £2,750 and has almost reached the halfway mark.

He is also hosting a fundraising evening at The Park Inn, based on Buckstones Road in Shaw on Saturday (February 11).

Amongst the fundraising activities on offer will be a horse racing betting event, killer pool, darts and a raffle with prizes including wine and chocolates.

There will also be food on offer, with all the proceeds raised on the night going to the Velindre Centre.

The evening is set to get underway at 6pm, with everyone invited to take part.

Neil will set off from the UK on March 21 and will start his walk two days later, aiming to finish on March 30 before returning home on April 1.
