A supermarket in Royton has been forced to close again due to another power cut.

The Co-operative store on Rochdale Road is closed until further notice as a power outage has resulted in a "total loss" of its chilled and frozen produce.

Store manager, Darren Ramsden, made the announcement to customers on social media and said when the shop does reopen, it will have a limited stock for some time.

Mr Ramdsen added: "I am sorry for the inconvenience caused by this and the store team are working quickly to resolve the matter.

"I will be reaching out to food bank charities to make light of a bad situation once more and will update the community with information on this."

The news comes as the Co-op suffered a power outage of more than 24 hours in July last year as North West Electricity had found a 'smoking' cable somewhere near the car park.

Staff then worked hard to save as many of the items as possible and ended up donating hundreds of pounds work of stock to struggling people in the community.

At least £800 went to Oldham Foodbank and £2,000 of no high-risk items to Think! Food 2 Plate.

The Co-op team are once again working around the clock to prevent the food going to waste.

Mr Ramsden revealed the food hasn't been refrigerated since 1am this morning (Monday, February 26), meaning the stock has been over its storage temperature for more than seven hours.

He added: "The majority of what is lost, is lost.

"I appreciate people reaching out but we also need to be careful with food safety implications.

"I have reached out to Oldham Food Bank and Oldham Think, Food to Plate to take bread etc and best before products that don't require to be refrigerated.

"It would be unethical to provide food to children or pregnant mothers that could be tarnished.

"I hope that you understand we would not want to inflict illness onto either suggested parties, and won't take this risk.

"The food that can be given will be distributed across the two local-based food banks for the benefit of local people."
