An Oldham man has been jailed for more than two years after he was caught robbing a supermarket.

On Monday (February 26), serial offender Daniel May attended Manchester Crown Court, on Minshull Street, via video link from prison as he pleaded guilty for 11 separate offences, which included assault, shoplifting, burglary and robbery.

The string of crimes occurred over a three-month period last year between July 26, when he burgled Scruples Beauty Lounge & Academy on Rochdale Road in Royton, to the October 24, when he stole toiletries from Boots in Oldham.

Judge Paul Reid KC said: "At the time you had an addiction to class A drugs and were stealing to fund that addiction, you were homeless at the time."

May, who has been remanded in custody since October, is taking a methadone prescription to treat his heroine addiction.

Amongst the offences were two charges of using threatening abusive or insulting words or behaviour with the intent to cause fear or provoke unlawful violence to staff members at Co-Op on Rochdale Road, in Royton.

Judge Reid explained how May's behaviour left staff at the Co-Op scared and worried that he would return.

He continued: "The Co-Op in Royton the staff there are frightened of you. I've seen victims personal statement from members of staff who are affected.

"Going in there without regard for them, stealing as and when you please. Then on the occasion that they did stand up to you, resorting to two offences of threatening behaviour and one case assault by beating."
