An Oldham man who died in Turkey after a moped crash only decided to go on holiday just days before, an inquest was told.

In June last year, 27-year-old Kyle Barrow was killed after he came off a moped while on holiday with his friend Callum Noble, on the second day of the trip.

Today (February 27), an inquest into the death of Kyle, who lived in a flat on Yorkshire Street, was held at Rochdale Coroners Court.

Kyle and Callum had both travelled to Manavgat, in Turkey, on June 6 and a day later hired mopeds.

Reading the statement of Kyle's dad Marc Downs, Assistant Coroner Michael Salt said: "Kyle's holiday to Turkey was only last minute, he only decided to go a few days before he went.

"To Marc's knowledge he had never ridden a moped before.

"A short time later Marc received a call from Kyle's friend Callum who told Marc that Kyle had been in an accident. A short while later he was called again to tell him his son had died."

The court heard that Marc described his son as "an active man who enjoyed going out with his friends" and a loving uncle.

Callum and Kyle had been friends for 10 years prior to his death, and on the morning of June 7 they had been travelling through the town on mopeds.

The court heard during Callum's evidence, that "Callum was driving in front and recalled looking in the rear-view mirror and finding Kyle laughing", Assistant Coroner Salt said.

The next time Callum turned around he saw that Kyle was not there, so he went back down the road to see where he was, the court heard, and it was then that Callum discovered "Kyle was in a pool of blood" but that he was "still conscious", and explained that "there was a lorry that had stopped".

Reading Callum's statement, Assistant Coroner Salt said: "He seemed as if he was trying to laugh and then died in my arms.

"The police said Kyle had driven into a palm tree but from where he was that looked impossible to me."

The court heard that neither Kyle nor Callum were wearing helmets at the time.

In Callum's statement, he mentioned that an ambulance arrived and "one crew member got out looked at him and drove off", and that Kyle then had to wait 15 minutes for another ambulance to arrive.

He continued to say that Kyle was then taken to a nearby hospital and “after a long-time doctors came out and told me that he had been returned to the angels”.

The postmortem was undertaken by pathologist Dr Emil Salmo whose report revealed evidence of more than one injury – including a fractured spine, and he believed that the cause of death was multiple injuries.

Delivering his conclusion Assistant Coroner Salt said: “He had only arrived in Turkey shortly before the 7th June.

“Kyle died on the 7th June 2023 in Manavgat, Turkey having been involved in a road traffic collision - the exact circumstances of the road traffic collision are unknown.”

He added that the cause of death is that of a “road traffic collision in relation to this young man's death”.
