A traditional countryside pub in Oldham has announced the 'sad news' that it will be closing its doors for good in a matter of weeks.

The Black Ladd Pub on Buckstones Road in Shaw made the shock announcement on social media that it will close for good by the end of the month.

Bosses at the pub cited 'tough times', from the pandemic to the current cost-of-living crisis, as reasons behind the decision to shut up shop.

In May last year, the pub changed hands under new management and rolled out a fresh menu.

The pub is well known for its food challenges, such as its 100oz steak challenge and a 'belly buster' breakfast challenge which has been tackled by a famous YouTuber - and attempted by The Oldham Times.

However, despite its popularity, the team said the hospitality trade has struggled since the pandemic "and we have had to contend with astronomical energy prices, increased supplier costs and fewer customers during the weekdays due to the financial climate".

The Black Ladd Pub added: "Unfortunately, we pay high rent, the building is old and the utility costs are extortionate.

"We have a great chef but when your outgoings are more than your income...

"I don't think we will be the only hospitality business that closes.

"We are all devastated that we have to close.

"I really hope the landlord continues to keep the business going in the future."

Bosses then announced "with great sadness" that the pub will close on Monday, March 18.

The post addressed to customers continued: "It would be great to see you before we close, and if anyone has a gift voucher, these will need to be redeemed before the 18th.

"So, if you need that last fix of our popular pea and ham soup or cheese and onion pie, there is still time to make your booking.

"The team would love to see you one last time to say goodbye."

Reacting to the news, customers said it was a 'shame' to see the pub go with many saying they have been going to the countryside alehouse for decades for its cheese and onion pie and "amazing meals".

A woman said she was "proper gutted" while another wrote: "Gutted to hear this news - great place, beautiful views, gorgeous food and always a friendly welcome. As my daughter says, 'it's my favourite place' and I certainly agree."

A third comment read: "Such a shame, been tonight and a very good meal. The staff were extremely friendly and courteous. Going to be a sad loss."

The Black Ladd Pub has been approached for comment.
