Barclays has announced it is closing down its Oldham branch due to most customers doing their banking online.

The international bank's branch on High Street in Oldham town centre will close its doors on Friday, May 24, at 12pm.

A statement on the bank's website reads: "We're permanently closing this branch from 12pm on Friday 24 May 2024.

"We’ll continue to be part of your community in Oldham. We’re just finalising the arrangements of where and when we'll be available to support you, and as soon as they are confirmed we’ll share the details."

A Reasons for Closure report shared by Barclays says that when the branch opened, visiting in person was one of the only ways for people to do their banking, but now many people bank using the app, online or on the phone.

Barclays said: "This has had a big impact on the number of customers coming in to see us."

According to the report, 94 per cent of people who use the Oldham branch also banked using the app, online and by phone in 2022 and only 141 customers regularly use the branch as the only way of doing their banking.

Barclays added that it is working to understand the impact of closing the branch and that once it has gathered the feedback, a booklet called Branch Closure Feedback will be published.

This will involve the bank speaking to the local MP, Jim McMahon, as well as a councillor and customers to understand how the community will be impacted by the closure.

The nearest branches for Barclays customers from Oldham to visit will be based on Mosley Street and Market Street in Manchester city centre, as the Barclays branch in Rochdale is set to close in April.
