A team of landlords who have been at the helm of a Royton pub for the past four decades have announced they will be stepping down by the end of the month.

The Turks Head pub on Castleton Road serves up classic pub food, from an assortment of pies, dumplings, Sunday roasts, fish and chips, burgers and grilled meat, to some local classics such as Oldham's beef rag pudding and Lancashire lamb hotpot.

It has accumulated a 4.6-star rating from almost 700 Google reviews over the years, with many writing that the homecooked food is "fantastic" and "delicious" and describing the pub as "a real hidden gem" serving "honest pub grub".

However, bosses behind the alehouse, Neil, Marjorie, Steven and Carolyn, announced in a post on social media that they will be stepping down from the pub and new tenants will take over by the end of the month.

The team have run the pub for more than four decades but will be bidding goodbye for good as of Sunday, March 24.

The post read: "After 40 years of running the Turks Head we have decided that the time is right to leave.

"Our kitchen will close at 6pm on Sunday, March 24, however the pub will remain open under new tenants.

"We leave with many very happy memories and thank all our customers for their support over the very many years."

Floods of comments from customers have since been pouring in with many celebrating the happy memories and "lovely meals" they've had at Turks Head.

One loyal customer commented: "To Neil, Marjorie and all the family, what will we do when we are next home!

"I have so many fabulous memories after working for a number of years behind the bar and we always feel welcome when we visit.

"I will miss not popping in to say 'hi'.

"All the best to all the Butterworth family, sending you all my love and best wishes."

Another woman added: "You will be greatly missed and so will the food if it will no longer be served.

"Forty years! Wowzers. All the very best in your new adventures."

Meanwhile, a man wrote: "That's a hard act to follow."
