A popular beauty spot in Saddleworth is reportedly overrun by cars this bank holiday as drivers are now being encouraged to go elsewhere.

Dovestones Reservoir is arguably the borough's favourite beauty spot, situated on the edge of Oldham and the Peak District National Park.

With the sun shining and the bank holiday weekend well underway, walkers have today apparently flocked in their droves to the stunning green space.

However, residents and the authorities have long complained about the parking issue at the site during peak times.

Last year, police urged drivers not to park illegally when visiting the reservoir and more than 30 fines were handed out in the space of two days in June.

The council is now warning the car park and surrounding lay-bys are currently "full" today (Friday, March 29).

In a post on social media, the local authority said: "Looks like it's a popular day to explore.

"Please consider visiting during quieter times or exploring alternative spots nearby."

Reacting to the post, some residents blasted the council for "promoting" the beauty spot in the first place while others said it is "the only nice place to go in Oldham that's free".

However, the council said there are a "variety" of other places to explore, including Dunwood Park in Diggle and Chadderton Hall Park.

Another man wrote: "This should be a local reservoir for local people."
