A rugby league player was charged with drink driving after he was arrested in the early hours of Good Friday.

Fenton Rogers, from Saddleworth, was arrested in connection with an incident on Platting Road at 12.30am.

The 20-year-old, of Wrigley Street, is a rugby league player on the books of Huddersfield Giants although he has had spells at Roughyeds, Rochdale, and other sides in West Yorkshire.

Rogers is set to appear at Tameside Magistrates' Court on May 16 to answer the charge of drink driving. He was bailed on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker but not charged.

A Huddersfield Giants spokesperson said he was suspended to allow for an internal investigation by the club.

The Huddersfield Giants spokesperson said: "The club were made aware by Fenton Rogers of an incident the previous day which led to him being detained for questioning by the police.

"The club has suspended him with immediate effect pending the outcome of their own investigation. No further comment will be made at this stage."
