Oldham's most prolific fundraiser is back again with another major challenge as he plans to set sail to Mongolia and Guatemala to tackle five marathons and five mountains known as the 'ring of fire'.

Steve Hill MBE is the deputy headteacher at St Joseph's school in Shaw and has won several accolades for his services to education.

However, he is also passionate about learning beyond the classroom - and expanding resources for both local Oldham children and youngsters overseas through his fundraising efforts.

As the founder of the Team Hill Charitable Trust, he has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for causes close to his heart, which includes building a school and facilities for a village in Uganda.

Steve has travelled all over the world to complete expeditions and challenges such as the Uganda marathon, where not only does he sit as a Chairman on its Board of Trustees, but has ticked off the challenge himself an impressive five times to date.

In 2015, Steve was invited to Buckingham Palace where he met the late Queen Elizabeth II to receive his MBE, and published a book to inspire his school pupils, called 'What's Nex Sir?'.

While he has countless awards and titles to his name for his fundraising efforts, in February this year he also received a nod from the Prime Minister when he received the Points of Lights Award from Downing Street.

Last summer, Steve completed a mega 'month of marathons' through the tough terrains of Costa Rica and Tajikistan, and has now revealed he has yet another challenge up his sleeves to take on in the summer holidays of 2024.

This time, Steve plans on tackling five back-to-back marathons and five mountains known as 'the ring of fire' when schools break up for summer.

He explained he will be running five marathons through Mongolia and then climbing five mountains in Guatemala, including the highest mountain in Central America, all to raise money for The Team Hill Charitable Trust.

At the time of writing, his 'big five' challenge has already raised more than £8,000 on the charity's JustGiving page.

Speaking to The Oldham Times, Steve said: "The five marathons through Mongolia is just that, five consecutive marathons along the Mongolia trail.

"Then the five mountains in Guatemala are known as 'the ring of fire' as they are all volcanoes.

"That includes the Pacaya Volcano, Acatenango Volcano, Chicabal Volcano, Tajumulco Volcano, the highest in Central America, and San Pedro Volcano."

He added: "I'm very excited about this next challenge.

"Once again, it's going to push me beyond my limits but I'm very much looking forward to what's in store.

"It should be fun!"
