Teachers across Oldham could face higher workloads and longer working hours as several schools in the borough go over capacity, a union has warned.

As parents begin to find out which primary school has offered their child a place for September this year, new data has revealed several schools in Oldham will be over capacity.

The figures show 13 primary schools in Oldham have accepted more pupils than it has space for, including Christ Church CofE Primary School on Delph Road (16.47 per cent over capacity), Corpus Christi RC Primary School in Chadderton (9.64 per cent over capacity) and St Paul's CofE Primary School in Royton (5.24 per cent over).

The data shows demand for places in these schools has been steadily rising in the last three years.

However, NASUWT, a national teachers’ union, has warned schools over capacity have a "direct" and "obvious" impact on both teachers and their pupils.

Rachel Knight, NASUWT National Executive Member for Oldham said: “Larger class sizes have a direct and obvious impact on teachers’ workload and working hours and also limit teachers’ ability to give each pupil individual time and attention during lessons.

“At a time where schools are struggling to recruit and retain teachers, having so many schools in the borough working over capacity is only likely to exacerbate the challenges facing the profession."

Ms Knight also explained schools dealing with oversubscribed places is a result of "our disjointed school place planning system" where "local authorities are tasked with ensuring enough school places, but do not have the necessary powers commensurate with that responsibility", she added.

Oldham Council has also been approached for comment.
