Diners can enjoy a menu stacked with the finest English dishes in homage to St George next week.

The Fence Gate, in Wheatley Lane Road, Fence, is putting on a special menu in tribute to our patron saint, who will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 23.

The three-day culinary event will feature the finest produce from England and locally in Lancashire for a truly English feast, with bespoke dishes created specifically for the menu.

Kevin Berkins, master butcher, master chef and owner of the Fence Gate, said: “Locally sourced produce is important to us at The Fence Gate.

“It’s only right we celebrate this in style for St George’s Day.

“We’re unique in the true field-to-fork concept. Not many pubs or restaurants butcher their own meat.

“Our St George’s Day menu and specials are going to be fantastic, celebrating the very best of English and Lancastrian produce.”

For starters, diners will enjoy a ‘Brown Windsor soup’, a specialty dish of beef soup with vegetables and herbs, finished with a drop of sherry.

The dish dates back to the Victorian era and is said to be the soup that built the British Empire.

The star of the show will be a dish titled ‘The Country and The County’s Favourite’, which will feature a 35-day dry-aged roast sirloin of beef from Berkins Deli at the Eagle at Barrow, alongside a mini lamb hot pot – the nod to Lancashire’s best known dish – served with roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and gravy inside a giant Yorkshire pudding.

Rounding things off, dessert is a traditional Bakewell tart, invented in the eponymous town in the heart of the Peak District, served with custard.

Diners who head along to enjoy the special menu will receive a free bottle of wine if they order two full three-course meals, while those opting for two-courses get dessert for free.

The limited-time menu runs from Tuesday, April 23, to Thursday 25, and booking is advised.
