A brass band from Oldham is set to hike up the biggest mountain in Wales in a bid to raise £1,000.

The Uppermill Brass Band, which is based at Saddleworth Cricket Bowling and Tennis Club, will scale Snowdon this weekend.

The intimidating peak has an elevation of 1,085 metres above sea level, which makes it larger than any mountain in England - and even the highest in the British Isles south of the Scottish Highlands.

An intrepid team of 10 musicians will embark on the epic trek today (April 20) and have set up a GoFundMe page.

"We often raise money as a band, and this time decided to climb up Snowdon," explained 41-year-old conductor James Garlick.

The professional trombonist added: "The money will go towards the servicing of our instruments, because repairs are needed each year. We even have some instruments dating back to the 1980s.

"And it is not always possible to buy brand new - a brand new cornet is £3,500, for example."

The Uppermill Brass Band features musicians aged between 15 and 68 years old, with 28 members in total. The brass section has 25 players, while three musicians offer their talents in percussion.

The band has a wide and varied concert programme planned for 2024, which includes Oasis Supernova, Concerts for the Whole Family, Last Night of the Proms, and more.

That is on top of its regular calendar of events, with performances at Christmas Eve Carols in the Community, Whit Friday and the Remembrance Service.

The hiking team said they were keen to provide the town with a band "to be proud of" and that the Snowdon challenge would ensure the band "remains at the heart of the community".

They have launched a fundraiser ahead of their climb, which can be found on GoFundMe.
