Out of more than 47,000 Guinness World Records, five are held in Oldham.

From a world first to a monumental achievement by a man in his 70s, the list of records includes those either broken in the borough or achieved by Oldhamers.

Over in Saddleworth, the most expensive bottle of gin was sold for £3,800 by Dan and Faye Thwaites to The Old Bell Inn, Delph.

The 700ml bottle of Morus LXIV gin was sold with a 30ml decanter worth £200 for a total of £4,000, in November 2018.

The record which dates back the furthest is one held by Louise Brown - the world's first test tube baby - born at 11.47pm on July 25, 1978.

She weighed five pounds and 12 ounces when she was delivered by a caesarean section at Oldham General Hospital from Lesley Brown, who was 31 at the time, after being externally conceived on November 10, 1977.

Two of the final three records are held by Oldham Athletic chairman Frank Rothwell - who earlier this year beat his own world record as he became both the oldest person to row across the Atlantic solo, and the oldest person to row across any ocean on his own.

On December 13, Frank departed from San Sebastian, La Gomera - the Canary Islands in Spain, aged 73 years and 157 days in his vessel he named Never Too Old, and arrived 64 days later at English Harbour, Antigua, aged 73 years 221 days on February 15.

In doing so, he surpassed his previous record, having completed the same east-to-west route covering about 3,000 nautical miles (5,554 km; 3,450 mi) between December 12 2020 and February 6 2021, departing aged 70 years 156 days and arriving aged 70 years 212 days.

On both rows, Frank was seeking to raise funds for the charity Alzheimer's Research UK.

Rounding off the list is another famous face, as Oldham's Kevin Sinfield holds the record for the most points scored in a rugby Super League career.

While playing for Leeds Rhino between September 1998 and March 2014, Sinfield scored 3,498, the majority of which were kicks, although his first was a try against Huddersfield in his second Super League appearance.

The loose forward has won six Super League trophies and in 2012 won the coveted Golden Boot awarded to the best player in the world each season - making one of only four Englishmen to have won it.
