All of these cases involving people from Oldham have been before the magistrates in the last fortnight.

A man has narrowly avoided prison after being on a plane while he was drunk.

Javaid Haji, of Derwent Walk, Greenacres, was on a flight at Manchester Airport on January 22 when he was found to be in a drunken state.

At Manchester Magistrates' Court on April 23, the 53-year-old was sentenced, having pleaded guilty to being drunk in an aircraft at a previous hearing.

Haji was handed a prison sentence of four months, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work.

He was also made to pay a victim surcharge of £154 and further costs of £85.

An Oldham man who was drug driving in Manchester was also caught with a baton.

Adam Tyrell, of Lilac Lane, in the Hollins area of Oldham, was driving an Audi A3 on Oldham Road in Manchester on August 17 last year when he was stopped.

A blood sample showed that the 34-year-old was driving while he had cocaine and cannabis in his system.

It was also found that Tyrell had a collapsible baton in his possession.

At Manchester Magistrates' Court on April 23, he sentenced for possessing the offensive weapon and drug driving.

Tyrell was handed a prison sentence of six months, suspended for 12 months, and has been disqualified from driving for 18 months.

He was also ordered to attend 15 days of rehabilitation activity requirement, along with being made to pay a victim surcharge of £154 and further costs of £85.

An Oldham man has been sentenced for stealing a bike in Salford.

Samuel Bamforth, of Windsor Road, Oldham, stole the bike on June 19 last year.

After pleading guilty to the theft back in January, the 47-year-old was sentenced at Manchester Magistrates' Court on April 25.

Bamforth was handed a community order, requiring him to undergo a six-month long period of alcohol treatment and to attend 20 days of rehabilitation activity requirement.

He was also made to pay compensation of £600.
