A man has suffered life-changing injuries following "a number of incidents of disorder" in Royton over the weekend.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) authorised the use of Section 60 and 60AA powers across an area of Royton following the incidents on Sunday (May 5) night.

The orders began at 8pm last night (May 6) and ran until 4am this morning and gave officers the power to stop and search people and requiring people to remove face coverings used to disguise or conceal their appearance.

It came after multiple reported incidents of disorder in and around Royton on Sunday night, which included reports of a group of men with weapons.

Police said one incident left a man with life-changing injuries.

No arrests have been reported.

Superintendent Phil Hutchinson of GMP Oldham District, said: “Our officers are conducting several enquiries, but I fully understand that the nature of these incidents and our increased presence in the community will spark some concern.

“Please be assured that we are working round the clock to ensure the safety of the local community and to do this we have increased visible officers across the district to provide added reassurance to the public.

"If you have any concerns, or would like to share some information with them, please do not hesitate to speak to them; they are there to help you.

“We have authorised a section 60 and 60AA which is highlighted in the map. Within this area we are able to stop and search anyone if we have reason to believe they are conducting criminal activities, carrying offensive weapons, or to direct them to remove face coverings.

“We will continue to have a presence in the area beyond the conclusion of the additional powers and I would like to thank the public for their support. Please continue coming forwards with information that will allow us to take action to keep our streets safe.
