The locations are just as much a talking point as the plots themselves in the new series of the hit ITV drama Ridley.

The detective drama stars Adrian Dunbar, of Line of Duty fame, with the second episode airing tonight.

Filming for the series took place across Lancashire and Yorkshire, with key scenes filmed in and around Oldham.

The stunning Watergrove Reservoir, just across the border in the Wardle area of Rochdale, is the glorious setting for Alex Ridley, played by Dunbar, lakeside home.

Visit Rochdale states that the area around Watergrove Reservoir includes walking trails with spectacular views, bird watching, fishing and a link to the Pennine Bridleway. It also has  a fascinating wealth of archaeological remains.

The reservoir is a popular walking place with remnants of the drowned village of Watergrove, including the Wave Wall with inscribed date stones from the former village and farms.

Visitors can also explore ruins of farms and other buildings.

The jewellery heist plot is said to have been filmed in Ashton-under-Lyne - and tonight Belmont, near Bolton, will be featured.

Episode three next week will feature Heaton Hall for an illegal rave plotline.

The police station scenes seen in the first episode are filmed in the beautiful buildings of Le Mans Crescent - a favourite location for many TV and film producers.

The reservoir is a popular location for TV producers with the sequel to After The Flood also being filmed there.

More and more TV dramas are being filmed in the North West, with some biggest series showcasing Oldham and the region to millions at home and abroad. Fool Me Once was filmed in the town and across Greater Manchester.
