Tom Pett's first goal for Oldham Athletic and Joe Garner's first of the season earned a comeback point against in-form Shrewsbury Town.

A frustrating theme of not capitalising on chances continued in the first half at Boundary Park as Latics were denied by the woodwork three times in a goalless first half.

Joe Robson saw a sweet left-foot strike canon back off the bar, Donervon Daniels clipped the top of the crossbar from inside the six-yard box, before Michael Mellon glanced a header from a right wing cross against the near post.

The misses came back to haunt Latics within 20 seconds of the second half when Anthony Scully fired a shot in-off the underside of the crossbar.

The irony was not lost on Latics, but they kept battling and got their rewards with a 51st minute equaliser for Pett, who received Jamie Robson's cutback just outside the area and bulged the net.

Latics had chances to take the lead and capitalise on Will Brook looking less than assured in the Shrewsbury goal.

But they were made to pay for their own defensive mistake when a mix-up between Daniels and Jake Caprice near the halfway line put them on the back foot, and Burnley loanee Tommy McDermott - a former Latics Under 14s player - scored his first league goal in the first minute of stoppage time.

But cometh the hour, cometh the man, and Garner scored his first goal at the end of his first start to equalise.

Ryan Woods put an inviting ball into the box, and Garner thumped a header past Brook in the 95th minute.
