The mum and daughter duo running 'proper' Oldham pub

This week's Pub of the Week is The Haggate, which was taken on by Jamielee Conway and her daughter, Shauna, in October last year.

The team also includes Jamielee's husband Matthew, who is a plasterer by trade but helps the pair out on weekends.

After four months at the helm, Jamielee and Shauna say they are proud of the place they've created in the community.

The pair took over with hopes to 'bring back a proper, family-friendly local' to Royton, and now they say they have done just that.

Speaking to The Oldham Times, Jamielee, 41, said: "The Haggate is a proper local community pub with a long history in the area.

"It’s always been a place where neighbours meet, families come together and everyone feels welcome.

"We’ve worked hard to keep that traditional pub feel while adding new events and food to keep it fresh."

Jamielee explained that she and her 20-year-old daughter have started hosting themed nights and events.

These include tapas nights, football nights, and even family movie afternoons.

Asked about what makes the pub so special, Jamielee said: "The people.

"We’ve got amazing regulars and a real community spirit – from Sunday bingo and quiz nights to Grand National days, kids activities and live singers.

Asked about her favourite thing about the pub and running it, Jamielee said: "The friendly atmosphere, good home-cooked pub food, live sports on Sky Sports & TNT Sports, and our events like bingo, quizzes and themed nights.

"Seeing people enjoying themselves and bringing the pub back to life with events like tapas nights, pie week specials, football nights and family movie afternoons."

The one word Jamielee said she would use to describe the pub was 'welcoming'.

The landlady also spoke about the food menu, and said: "We serve homemade pub classics like pies, burgers, breakfasts and kids meals.

"Our Steak & Manchester Pale Ale Pie starting next week for pie week, along with club sandwiches, BLTs and our tapas nights and cheese and wine nights have been a great success."

Running the pub hasn't been the easiest task, and Jamielee explained the impact of the pressure on the industry.

She said: "Like many pubs, rising costs and keeping things affordable for customers has been tough, but we keep going by staying creative with events and good value deals like Pie & Pint specials."

She also said that some of her most memorable moments was seeing the pub 'packed' for the Christmas period and Sunday bingo nights, as well as 'everyone cheering together' for the Six Nations.

Jamielee shared that their best-selling beers are the Manchester Pale Ale and guest ale sells really well, along with the regular JW Lees beers.

Jamielee finished by saying: "We’re really proud to be part of the community and always welcome new faces.
