That Wine Cellar owner announces closure of Delph shop

Owner Ian Howard revealed the news on social media, saying that he has been “broken” by the decision to cease the “bricks and mortar” aspect of the business.

He has reassured customers that “it’s not the end” for the business, which will continue online, including subscriptions.

Planned events will also continue, however, they will now be taking place at other local venues.

The post read: “I’m really sorry to be bringing this news but after three and a half years on King Street, Delph my final day trading at this address will be March 29, 2026.”

Explaining the reasons for the closure of the King Street premises, he added: “I have been on a rolling lease for the past six months and with the difficulties faced currently by small businesses and hospitality as a whole, I am not able to confidently commit to a lease of another three years.

“My landlord has been fantastic in allowing me all this time in making one of the hardest decisions, but it just feels like the right time.”

The wine merchant, who is also known as ‘That Wine Fella’, added in the caption of the post: “I currently have an email with 18 pages of price increases from just one of my importers.

“The margins in alcohol with all the cost increases are so small that it’s impossible to confidently commit myself to a long lease that could leave my family vulnerable.”

Mr Howard has also thanked his customers for their support and praised the local community, saying that he “couldn’t have been in a better village”.

He added: “Thank you for so many great memories and giving me the chance to allow my little crazy idea to be reality.

“This decision has broken me over these past months, and I am so sorry to let people down that love having a little wine-led haven from the madness.”

Anyone with vouchers for That Wine Cellar can still use them online by contacting Mr Howard directly for a code to use on the website.

The post has received an outpouring of support from community members in the comments.

Saddleworth-based chef and Masterchef winner Simon Wood said: “Gutted to read this mate, always here for a chat! I’ve loved working with you over this past year or so!

"You can’t keep a good man down. Carry on carrying on.”
