Oldham reacts as opening date for Spindles market revealed

The new space within the redeveloped Spindles shopping centre, simply called The Market, will be the town’s new home for independent traders and food businesses, including some from the current Tommyfield Market.

It has been described by council bosses as a “huge moment” for Oldham and the latest step in the town’s grand £450 million regeneration plan.

Announcing the news of a March 28 opening, council leader Arooj Shah said: “We know how much markets mean to local people.

“Our new market is about backing our amazing local traders, giving them a space they deserve, and bringing a wave of fresh energy into the centre of our town. It’s a modern, vibrant space that puts local talent at its heart, exactly what Oldham deserves.”

The market had originally been slated for a September 2025 opening, but it was postponed until the new year while work continued.

For many Oldhamers, the opening can’t come soon enough. In response to The Oldham Times' story on the opening announcement, we received more than 100 comments on Facebook from residents.

Some have commented on the delays and how long it has taken for the announcement.

Carol Binns Budgett said: “Om*g, forgot about this place. Is it 2030?”, while Alan Wild said: “Be just in time for Christmas then.”

Lynne Smart said: “About time, [it’s] just been dragging on?”

Others have questioned the need for a new market given the slow decline of the existing Tommyfield Market, which is due to be demolished once the move is complete.

Anthony Dobson said: “The beginning of the end? Or a resounding success? Only time will tell.”

Steve Milligan said: “Judging by our old indoor market, not many [traders will move] I would think. Many have abandoned ship. Can't imagine the rents in the new one.”

At the same time, there were plenty of people optimistic about the new opening and what it will mean for the town.

Karen Jones said: “It will be nice to stay warm whilst shopping, people need to give it a chance instead of being a negative Nancy, at least they are trying to make a decent market.

“People blame the councils for their market's decline, but it's us that's done it, it started with supermarkets, you didn't have to go to different shops anymore, then came the internet.”

Richard Whatmough said: “Wow, a lot of negative comments as per usual. Maybe just get behind the market and the stall holders trying to run a business.”

The Market opens its doors at 9am on Saturday, March 28. A day of activities and entertainment has been planned to mark the occasion.

The first 100 people through the door on launch day will receive a free goodie bag.
