The pub with a 'good mix' of customers and big plans ahead

The Park Inn on Buckstones Road, Shaw, recently got a new landlord in Steve Hastie, and features as this week's Pub of the Week.

Steve, 45, took over back in September having previously worked in other pubs, including one near his hometown of Ashton-under-Lyne just before he took over The Park Inn.

He said: "I've had a few pubs in the past and as a favour I took one on in Dukinfield which didn't have a good reputation.

"We turned it around and then The Park Inn was mentioned to me and I thought 'why not?'"

It meant stepping back into pubs full time for Steve after several years working as a delivery driver.

For Steve, what makes The Park Inn special is the diverse range of customers it attracts, including those who have gone for a walk up the nearby Crompton Moor.

He said: "It's been great since taking over, there's a good mix of people.

"There's the lads who play pool who all like a laugh and a joke, you get couples, and because there's a walking route, we get people coming in with a lot of dogs, so there's something for everyone."

Steve added that the people in the area are "really nice" and that there was a "solid foundation" when he took over The Park Inn, but that isn't stopping him from improving things.

He said: "We're going to be doing a renovation for the summer. We're going to fully decorate it, get a new pool table and darts board which will have a camera, and plenty more."

The Park Inn has always done food, but now there will be a change of chef, with a focus on "traditional pub food at a good price".

Not only that, Steve is looking to get more real ale in the pub to add to the popular Timothy Taylor's Golden Best, along with several lagers, of which Steve says Carling is the most popular.

Most pub landlords will tell you these days that it's a difficult time for the industry, and Steve is no different.

He said: "It's tough these days. It's hard when people have less money, they can't afford luxuries when they've got a lot of bills to pay."

However, Steve is looking to make sure The Park Inn remains a strong community pub which welcomes all sorts of people to enjoy traditional pub grub and a delicious pint.
