Oldham fish and chip shop confirms new town centre location

For the last 30 years, the chip shop has been located in one of the outdoor-facing units of Tommyfield Market.

Last month, most of the traders inside the market left Tommyfield for good and set up shop inside the new space at Spindles shopping centre.

The outside units, including Levers, are still open for business at Tommyfield for the time being, but will soon be moving to new locations.

Levers Fish and Chips has now confirmed to The Oldham Times that it will be taking over the town centre shop formerly occupied by BrightHouse. It is located opposite the Home Bargains and next to Shoe Zone.

In the meantime, the owners of Levers have stressed that the shop has not closed and is still serving customers as usual from its Tommyfield location.

Posting a message to customers on Facebook shortly after the closure of Tommyfield, Levers said: "Even though the market has relocated, Levers Chippy is STILL OPEN and we’re in the exact same shop as always.

"Nothing’s changed — same place, same friendly faces, and the same great fish and chips you love."

Customers are also still able to order via delivery apps Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats.

At the moment, dates for the closing of the Tommyfield location and the opening of the new location are yet to be announced, however the owners said they are aiming for July.

Now considered a local institution, Levers Fish and Chips first opened in 1991 and has served generations of Oldhamers.

Oldham has long claimed the title of the birthplace of fish and chips and there is a blue plaque honouring this claim to fame outside the existing Levers Fish and Chip shop.

Levers opening hours are 10.30am to 5.30pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 10.30am to 7.30pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, closed on Sunday.
