Why two girls walked from Manchester to Oldham Heron Foods

The girls, Elise and Marta, said they wanted to make the hike to visit Heron Foods on Hollins Road on Sunday (May 17).

The pair walked to the store from Whitworth Street, near Manchester Piccadilly train station and followed a route along the Rochdale canal, and showed several features along the way.

Setting off from Manchester city centre, Elise invited viewers to 'walk with us from Manchester city centre to Heron Foods in Oldham', as Marta explained it was a seven‑mile walk and promised updates 'as the miles go down'.

The pair charted their progress at each milestone, calling out one mile down, then two, three and four miles as they made their way out of the city.

The friends stopped frequently to point out landmarks and scenery.

At one stage, Marta announced they had reached the Cheshire Ring, while Elise admitted she was 'not sure' where they were, but said it was 'looking pretty cool' as she filmed what she called a 'canal reveal'.

They stayed on the towpath for several miles, passing a group of goslings, or 'gooslings', as Elise insisted on calling them, despite apparently having been corrected in the past.

The pair then joined the Oldham Road near Failsworth Library, and continued past Failsworth Pole, highlighting it as a progress marker on the journey.

The pair then reached the Heron Foods and headed inside to scope out the stock.

Elise filmed two items inside: Pizza flavoured beans and Monster Munch flavoured mayonnaise.

After leaving the shop, the pair revealed the reason they had embarked on the mission to begin with: great bargains.

Elise’s own haul totalled £2.36, including a surface cleaner, basmati and quinoa rice packet, a pack of 18p crumpets and a protein shake for 79p, which she repeatedly described as a bargain.

Marta revealed she 'tripled' her spending compared with another trip, where they walked from Manchester to Ashton Heron Foods, but still only spent £3.25 on eight stock cubes, two banoffee pie protein pots, crumpets also reduced to 18p, and a veggie masala discounted from £3.50 to £1.

The video was shared on TikTok on Elise's account and gained nearly 30,000 views within a day.
