A traveller community has set up a camp at Noddy's Field in Chadderton.
Caravans started arriving on the site yesterday (Sunday, May 17), according to residents.
They have shared images and videos of the encampment with The Oldham Times, which shows at least a dozen vehicles on the field, including some with caravans.
Noddy's Field is a playing field often used for sports fixtures. It is also popular with local dog walkers and families.
One photo also shows a dog on site and one resident has also reported seeing a cockerel in the field.
Some residents are concerned about safety as quad bikes and scramblers have also been spotted being ridden by children.
Chadderton North councillor Jon Ford said in a post on Facebook that he is aware of the “significant number of caravans” on Noddy’s Field and that the council has confirmed that "enforcement action is in process".
Similarly, Oldham Mayor, Cllr Eddie Moores, has also posted a message about the travellers on Facebook, saying that he had informed First Response “and the Council are taking appropriate steps”.
The traveller way of life often involves moving from place to place, staying in different locations for varying periods of time.
They are protected from discrimination under the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Human Rights Act 1998, alongside all ethnic groups with distinct cultures, languages or values.
If an encampment has been set up on privately owned land, it is the landowner's responsibility to seek eviction.
Oldham council has been contacted for comment.
