Oldham’s Kevin Sinfield will be one of the leaders of this Sunday’s AJ Bell Great Manchester Run, alongside Dame Kelly Holmes and actor Sally Lindsay.

They will be leading 38,000 runners taking part in this year’s half marathon and 10k races

The former professional Rugby League player and the current England Rugby Union coach is known for his ultramarathon “7 in 7” running challenges.

After starting the race, he will be joining a team of 50 runners taking on the 10K route, raising money for the MND Association.

He has raised millions for MND research since the diagnosis of his teammate, Rob Burrows, who died from the disease two years ago.

Sinfield will be joined by Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes and Scott and Bailey star Sally Lindsay, who will be running in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.

Previous leaders of the Great Manchester Run include other sporting legends, such as Usain Bolt, Haile Gebrselassie, Jessica Ennis Hill and Sir Alex Ferguson.

The race will begin on Portland Street in Manchester city centre, passing iconic local landmarks such as Old Trafford, the Etihad Stadium, the Imperial War Museum and Salford Quays, and finishing on Deansgate.

It is expected to be the biggest Great Manchester Run yet, with 40,000 taking part, including the young runners in the Junior and Mini kids events taking place on Saturday, May 30.

More than 150,000 spectators are also expected to be cheering on the runners in Manchester city centre and along the other areas of the route.

If you are unable to watch in person, the run will also be televised live on BBC Two from 11am to 1pm.

Entry for this year's race has already closed, but registration is now open for the Great Manchester Run 2027.
