Earlier this year, an application for 68 affordable new homes on a plot of land in Woodhouses village was submitted to the council.
Over the last few months, over 600 residents have objected to the scheme on the council’s planning portal, and a campaign group has been formed in opposition.
One of the ways in which they are drumming up support for the cause is an online petition, which has just passed 1,000 signatures.
Started by Failsworth resident Sarah White, the petition states: "Building on these lands will have a detrimental impact on the environment, leading to the loss of vital wildlife habitats and green spaces that provide essential ecosystem services like air purification and carbon sequestration.
"According to the UK Government’s National Planning Policy Framework, greenbelt lands are designated to prevent urban sprawl and protect the environment.
"If we continue to encroach upon these areas, we risk losing the very essence of what makes Failsworth special."
Loss of green belt land is at the heart of their objection, but the petition outlines other areas of concern.

Ms White’s petition said that the planned development would "impose significant stress on our already strained local infrastructure", including roads, transport, and healthcare, as well as "a general decline in quality of life for existing residents".
She added: "We should prioritise sustainable development that truly accommodates the needs of our community without compromising our environment.
"There are numerous brownfield sites that could be developed first, sites that would benefit from the investment and would not require sacrificing our greenbelt.
"Additionally, implementing stricter regulations on property developers to ensure they contribute to local infrastructure could help mitigate some of the issues we face."
While the residents in Failsworth await a decision on the proposal, another housing scheme appears to be being eyed up on land directly next to the 68-home proposal.
Documents show that a ‘Request for Environmental Impact Assessment Screening Opinion’ has been submitted for an area of the village west of Failsworth Road and north of Medlock Road.
This is not a full planning application, but a step taken before one is submitted.
It will determine if an environmental statement would be needed as part of the proposal.
If successful, it would see 150-180 houses built on the land, of which at least 22.5 per cent will be affordable homes.
