A major road in Oldham town centre will be closed from today until September while essential maintenance work takes place.

Drivers have been warned to expect disruptions on the Oldham Way flyover, also referred to as the Manchester Street Viaduct, as part of the refurbishment.

The full closure of the road in both northbound and southbound directions is set to last until September 3.

In a statement issued last week, the council explained the importance of the work.

A spokesperson said: "The Manchester Street Viaduct is a vital piece of infrastructure which carries thousands of vehicles every day and plays a key role in keeping Oldham connected, locally, regionally, and nationally.

"Built in the late 1970s, it is now showing its age and needs essential and extensive repairs to keep it safe and open for the future.

"The improvements will help extend the life of the viaduct and ensure Oldham continues to have a reliable road network for years to come."

The scheme will involve waterproofing, expansion joint replacement, concrete repairs, parapet refurbishment, and resurfacing.

In total, the scheme is set to cost £6.5million, which consists of a £4million grant from the Department for Transport’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS), as well as a £2m local highways maintenance contribution from Oldham Council.

Diversions

The council has now released more details of the diversions in place during the closure.

Drivers travelling in the southbound direction are advised to leave the A62 at the Manchester Street Roundabout exit slip road, go around Manchester Street Roundabout and rejoin the A62 using the Manchester Street Roundabout entry slip road.

There are also separate diversion instructions for heavy goods vehicles on the Oldham Council website.

Oldham Council has said it plans to keep "disruption to a minimum and will continue to keep residents, businesses, and drivers updated throughout the closure."

Regarding the diversions, a spokesperson said: "Signed diversion routes will be in place, and we would encourage people to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys if needed.

"We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while these important repairs are carried out."
