Train station pub near Oldham named among the UK's best

The Telegraph has released its annual list of the Best Pubs in the UK for 26, featuring 500 in England, 75 in Scotland, 50 in Wales and 25 in Northern Ireland.

Each pub has been visited by a panel of judges, who have assessed the locations based on criteria such as “charming character, welcoming staff, rich history”, as well as the beers on offer.

Although there are sadly no Oldham establishments featured on the list, there are a couple nearby, including the historic Stalybridge Station Buffet Bar.

While station pubs are fairly common in the North West, The Telegraph said that “none are quite like the Stalybridge Station Buffet Bar, which is both authentically Victorian and has a genuine pub flavour”.

The newspaper also lists the pub as pet-friendly and close to some good walking routes. It also serves food at lunchtime.

Customers are also full of praise for the station bar, judging by its Google review page.

It has received an impressive rating of 4.6 out of five, based on almost 1,500 reviews.

One happy customer wrote: "One of the best pubs I've been to ever, basically a sweet shop for beer lovers. Best reason ever to miss a train. On purpose."

Another said: "This pub is legendary. It's everything you could want in a railway pub; great beer, good pies and pork scratchings, good music, friendly beardy barman. Oh, and of course loads of railway memorabilia! This place could not be improved on!"
