Planning documents have revealed that Sul Lago on Cutler Hill Road, near Crime Lake, could be redeveloped into five apartments after planning permission was approved.
The restaurant opened at its location more than 25 years ago and has become one of the borough's best-known restaurants, being particularly popular with Premier League footballers.
Sul Lago's owner and head chef Aldo Lucci told The Oldham Times that "all future viable options" are being explored for the restaurant, with planning documents revealing that the eatery is "no longer financially viable".
Following the announcement, some readers have been sharing their devastation.
Tony Jordan said: "One of my absolute fave places to eat. Aldo and his team run a fantastic restaurant. If this is the route he eventually takes it will be a very sad day, but I hope he keeps it as it is.

"However, hospitality is a nightmare these days. How any independent venues stay open is a miracle, so I would understand the reasons why."

Meanwhile, Harriet Williams added: "This is so so sad me and my family love this place."
The news will also be disappointing to some Premier League footballers, with Manchester City players frequenting Sul Lago in recent years.
Earlier this year, goalkeeper and Italian native Gianluigi Donnarumma visited the restaurant, with Mr Lucci saying the star "loved the food" and was planning his next visit.
According to planning documents, the redevelopment will see a "sensitive and sustainable reuse" of the building.
In total, five apartments will be developed, each with bedrooms, a bathroom, a living space, and a kitchen, with some balconies installed on the first floor.
Despite the fact it was felt Sul Lago's closure at the site would represent the "loss of a community resource of some twenty-five years", an Oldham Council planning officer decided this did not outweigh the benefits of the scheme.
