Despite the wind and rain, residents in Failsworth came out to support the first monthly pop-up market this weekend.
Organised by the Pop-Up Market Co, the event brought together local traders, as well as stall holders from other parts of the North West.
One of those local traders was Karol Darnell, who was selling independently published books, including her own, titled ‘Don’t Miss the Last Train Home’, based on her own family history in Failsworth.
She said: “It’s about my family that lived in Failsworth, on Wrigley Head, in 1900. I knew all the stories that my mum had told me. My great aunt Beatrice, when she died, left a postcard album. Years later, we found it in the attic, and it told the story of everything that had happened to my family.”
The author added that it was “great” to see an event like this thriving in Failsworth.
Alex, who sells a range of succulents at his stall Crafty Plants, came from Preston for the event.
He said: “It’s quite a busy little market. It’s quite bustling, despite the weather – a bit rainy and wet today. It’s quite a nice little place, really.”
Kerry was manning an organic dog treat stall called Charlie Boy’s Barkery. She said she had “made some happy dogs” at the market, which welcomed many four-legged visitors.
She added: “It’s been all right, yeah. We’ve had a really good morning, actually. Everyone’s been lovely. Met lots of new dogs. We’ve sold quite a lot of stock and are doing really well.”
Rachel started her hand-sewn gift business Sew Hanson while on maternity leave with her son six years ago.
She said: “I literally live around the corner, so I walked here with my stuff this morning. It’s just on my doorstep, so it’s a great opportunity. And it’s all the local people as well, so it’s been great.
“There’s nothing around here like this anymore. It’s all Cheshire way, isn’t it? So it’s nice to have something around Failsworth that’s good.”
The Failsworth pop-up market will now be a regular event, happening once a month on August 30, September 27, October 25, November 29, and December 20.
