Micky Mellon has confirmed that Michael Mellon will not be returning to Oldham Athletic following his loan spell last season.
The manager was quizzed about the young striker’s future at the latest fans forum event at Boundary Park.
Mellon Jr scored 10 goals in 18 appearances on loan from Burnley last term before his campaign was cut short by a hamstring injury.
Mellon Sr admitted that a deal would not be possible with the current budget but is optimistic that the club will be able to sign players of a similar calibre in the future if they can remain on their current trajectory.
The boss expects another couple of signings through the door. He was hoping to have one confirmed before Saturday’s friendly against Sheffield Wednesday but now it is looking like next week, and the unnamed player will feature for his parent club this weekend.
Latics have brought in nine fresh faces so far this summer following the addition of Fortune Fawunmi on a season-long loan from Stoke City.
Mellon also confirmed that winger Jack Stevens is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.
Stevens was stretchered off during the narrow defeat against League One side Stockport County on Tuesday night.
The 25-year-old chipped in with six goals and four assists in the league last season as Latics achieved a top 10 finish.
