New hub supporting young people to be rolled out in Oldham

More than 40 new Young Futures Hubs are set to open across England under the Government’s National Youth Strategy.

Oldham has been confirmed as one of the locations set to receive the hubs, with £100,000 of funding allocated which will aim to help young people tackle the challenges they face in society.

According to the government, the hub will offer mental health support, employment opportunities and crime prevention services to young people who attend.

It will also offer open access to sport, creative activities and trusted youth workers.

It will ensure that young people aged between 10 to 18, and up to 25 for those with SEND, can receive support without having to repeat their story to a different service each time they visit.

Earlier this year, MP for Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton, Jim McMahon, wrote to Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, arguing that Oldham was "exactly the kind of place" where the Young Futures Hubs should be rolled out.

The hubs scheme has been co-designed by thousands of young people and has been launched by Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Ms Nandy said: “Last year we spoke to thousands of young people who told us that they needed somewhere to go, something to do, and someone to talk to.

“That’s what these new Young Futures Hubs will give them. It is a symbol of this government wrapping their arms around young people, telling them we believe in their generation and that we know they can succeed.”

The Oldham Times contacted Oldham Council for comment, however the authority did not respond.
